Musician and political activist Kwame Asare Obeng alias A Plus has expressed his dissatisfaction with the ruling New Patriotic Party for submitting Ghana to the 17th bailout program of the International Monetary Fund.
People who defend the NPP will eventually be disgraced by it, according to A Plus.
Acknowledging that you’re doing your best to defend the NPP is the most unpleasant thing you can do in this world, especially in Ghana. During a discussion on Ghana’s current IMF program negotiation, he said, “I will caution everyone that the NPP will shame you”.
NPP supporters and campaigners who supported the NPP during its anti-IMF days were encouraged to support the government’s quest for the adoption of a 1.5 percent electronic transfer tax as opposed to an IMF bailout. Following the government’s choice to go to the IMF despite the approval and execution of the E-levy, he remarked that he felt degraded and ashamed.
While we all sat about and discussed E-Levy, I remarked that for us to attend the IM, it would be preferable for us to approve the E-Levy and earn our own revenue. He stated that the government’s use of the COVID-19 outbreak and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict to justify its decision to approach the IMF is unjustified. “When you question why, they say Russia and Ukraine are fighting, and when you take that away, they mention COVID,’ he said.
We’re going to the IMF because we don’t have any money.” People have taken the money that was made available during the COVID. It was an opportunity for the government to even generate money when COVID arrived.
