The current player transfer season in the football fraternity has been accompanied with revelations of staggering weekly wages earned by various crop of players around the world, especially clubs in elite football leagues in Europe.
Chief among them is the rumored five hundred and ten thousand pounds (510,000) weekly earnings of Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United among others.
Ever wondered why footballers earn so much money with many of them living luxurious lifestyles? There has been widely held arguments on this issue with many making such statements as “footballers make too much money that they don’t deserve”.
We live in a world where your income depends on your value for society. The value that football players provide us is purely great entertainment and to some extent income through betting.
The thunderous eruption of joy that follows a goal that is scored in a tensed football game is a proof of the immeasurable entertainment that football brings to many around the world.
A player like Cristiano Ronaldo earns so much money because he brings joy to a lot of people by playing good football and scoring goals. Same can be said of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and the likes.
Fans pay for TV subscriptions, jerseys and tickets to watch matches that features such kind of players. Huge sums of monies are generated from such merchandise that do not even come to players but as profits to the clubs they play for.
In reality, footballers don’t even receive what they deserve as the sole generators of such monies. There are so many Engineers, Doctors and Nurses but there are not so many like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Millions can become Pilots or Lawyers but only a handful of people can become world class players.
It could take another decade for another or a better Lionel Messi to emerge. This makes world class players difficult to replace. As much as they are in demand, the supply is limited!
In business, when demand is high with limited supply, prices go up. Hence the huge price tags and wages offered to football players.
This same analogy can be made for all other sports with huge payment structures. So instead being concerned about the wages they earn, why not rather sit back and enjoy the game in amusement with a glass of wine or beer as those footballers entertain you!
