Ghana’s yearly population increase of 700,000, according to the NPC, poses a significant challenge to the country’s growth, quality of life for its citizens and national programs like Ghana beyond aid initiative.
Dr Leticia Appiah, Executive Director of the National Population Council, was among the experts who spoke at a news conference marking the start of a week-long celebration of this year’s World Population Day in Accra on Thursday (July 7, 2022).
Every July 11, World Population Day (WPD) is commemorated by the United Nations Governing Council to raise awareness of the critical role that population concerns play in global, national and individual development.
The commemoration asks for a critical assessment of the relevant population and its linked concerns that support or impede rapid socio-economic growth for national attention and action.
For this year’s commemoration, the global theme is “A world of 8 billion: towards a robust future for everyone, harnessing possibilities and guaranteeing rights and choices,” while the national theme is “Prioritizing rights and choices; harnessing opportunities, the route to a resilient future for all.”
Other local events will include public discussions on demystifying family planning and contraceptive usage, among others.
