Four Ghanaian Legends Who Made Names In Inter-Schools Competitions And Became Global Stars

Inter-Schools Competitions in Ghana has always been interesting and nothing shows that it will end someday. It has produced great footballers who played in Ghana and abroad as well.

There are currently four Ghanaian football legends who were very famous when they played in the Inter-Schools competitions and later on got the opportunity to play in clubs outside Ghana.

These players were popular on their campuses and in the various Inter-Schools competitions they played.

The first player to start with is John Mensah. John Mensah is a Ghanaian former player who played as a defender. John Mensah attended OKESS SHS and played for their school team in the Inter-Schools competition in 1996-1997.

He was a very famous player and most students in that time knew him. He then moved to Europe to continue his football career at Bologna. He went on to play for Stade Rennes, Lyon and other European clubs.

Michael Essien

Michael Essien is the next player who was very famous during his time in the Inter-Schools competition. In 1996 the former Chelsea midfielder was a household name at AUGUSCO SHS based in Cape Coast.

He also went on to Europe to play for Bastia, moved to Lyon and then became one of the greatest Ghana player when he moved to Chelsea. He is undoubtedly the main reason why most Ghanaians supported Chelsea during his stay at the Stamford Bridge.

Derek Boateng

Derek Boateng is third Ghanaian former player who used to be a well known player in the Inter-Schools competition and the Spanish La Liga. He played for Mfantsipim SHS during his senior high education. He was also a well known player during the 1995 Inter-Schools competition.

His exploits helped him to move to Greece to continue his football career at Kalamata. He later on featured for Spanish club Getafe. He was a well known player in the league as well.

Sulley Muntari

The last player to talk about is current Hearts of Oak midfielder, Sulley Ali Muntari. He is still playing active football but his time in Europe was breathtaking. Sulley played for great clubs such as AC Milan, Inter Milan and the likes. He even got the opportunity to win the Champions league with Inter Milan in 2009/2010 season.

In terms of early popularity and school sports impact, Sulley Muntari tops. He played for OKESS SHS. He won the District Best Footballer, won the Ashanti Regional Interco MVP, scored the winner vs Takoradi Bompe School in the National Milo Championship and emerged the best player in 2000.
