The Confederation of African Football has announced the commencement of African Super League scheduled for August 2023. This decision was made following the postponement of 2023 African Cup of Nations to January-February 2024 in Cote D’ivoire. An amount of One Hundred Million Dollars, $100,000,000 will be the seed money with the winner set to take home Ten Million Dollars, $10,000,000.Â
Of interest to Ghanaians is the number of clubs that will be representing Ghana in the maiden competition. A list of 24 teams ha surfaced online with Asante Kotoko becoming the only Ghanaian club to appear in the 24-team list. This means, the defending league champions will be presented with the opportunity of hoisting the flag of Ghana high in African inter club competition.Â
Accra Hearts of Oak were tipped to make it to the competition but they were omitted. CAF may have relied on performance of clubs in it’s club competition over the years. Points build up could be a key factor in arriving at who plays on the competition. Inconsistent appearance of Ghanaian clubs in CAF inter club competition could be a major obstacle in any attempt to push Ghanaian teams into this new competition.
Four teams from Egypt have been included in the newly introduced competition, while Morocco have four teams as well. Cote D’ivoire and Ghana have been represented as well as South Africa. Three South African clubs have been named in the list.
