The Confederation of African Football has postponed the Africa Cup of Nations which was scheduled to be played in June next year. CAF President, Patrice Tihopane, made this announcement. Reasons given to this postponement included weather conditions. In June July, most west African countries Cote D’Ivoire experience the highest amounts of rainfall.

Over the years, the African Cup of Nations has been played in January and February. Concerns were that during that period, there was contention between foreign clubs and national teams over the release of players for the tournament. Most of the time, that is when the league becomes so hot such that each team needs every player for the competition.

Though the tournament has been moved back to January, February CAF secretary says there are no plans to permanently move it from June July because of the contrasting weather patterns in the various countries over the continent.

There would have been a lot of activity from November to February on the African football calendar if the AFCON was scheduled in January February 2023 knowing that the world will be played in November and December this year. That may be one reason why the tournament was pushed to 2024 instead of early next year.
