So far so good, the viable candidates for the NPP flagbearer position in the New Patriotic Party are Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Alan Kyeremanten, and Kennedy Agyapong. Currently, many experts have predicted that Ghanaian’s choice of President for 2024 will be dependent on their petty comments and stance on certain economic decisions taken by the incumbent government. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, is playing interesting political tactics that can work in favor of him. Anytime there is an economic scandal or any problem, he runs into exile and keeps his mouth shut on such issues.
After the coast is clear, he comes out and addresses the nation with some assuring words which stir the political climate. All in all, he aligns himself with the plans and policies of the Nana Addo-led administration but in a rather defensive and skillful manner.
Kennedy Agyapong, a member of Parliament for the Assin Central constituency, has taken the populism style and he has decided to condemn his own party so as to get the attention of Ghanaians.
Alan Kyeremanten, the man of the people, has rather decided to remain silent. He never spoke about the e-levy, the high inflation rate, the high cost of fuel, and now the IMF. Although his silence is protecting and presenting him as a better candidate than Bawumia and others, there is a high chance that Ghanaians might think he shares the views and the vision of the Nana Addo-led administration. One thing which Alan is failing to realize is that he is a member of the Economic Management Team and also a Trade and Industry Minister. Thus, he indirectly has some alignment with the Nana Addo government.
So he must rather speak and break his silence. Perhaps, the right thing is to defend the government and explain to Ghanaians some of the reasons behind the choices of the government.
