The former president of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has dropped some revelations concerning the economic hardships which are being faced by Ghanaians.
Speaking at a public lecture on Thursday afternoon, John Dramani Mahama dropped some reasons why the Akuffo Addo led government is unable to provide textbooks to various schools in the country. According to him, government spends almost all its revenue in the payment of loans and debentures.
“Our debt is ¢13.9 billion and all our revenue that was collected in the first quarter was ¢12.8 billion. So it means that all that revenue is going to pay the debt. You even need some extra. So where do you get money for wages and all other expenditures that government have to make.”
“Expressed in percentage terms, total debt collected this year is equal to 108% of all taxes that government collected in this period. So more than 100% of the taxes went into debt payment and amortization. This is the reason why government is unable to provide textbooks and other teaching materials for our school children” he said.
The ministry of education and the Ghana Education Service have changed the curriculum of various primary schools in the country. However, government has failed to provide the schools with the needed text books to support the learning of the new curriculum. John Mahama believes that it is as a result of public debt.
