The senior national team of Ghana was formed in 1951 after the United Kingdom invited the Ghanaian national team for a tour. The said tour was arranged by citizens of the United Kingdom to make peace and solidify the relationship between Ghana and UK after the 1948 riots.

Prior to the tour, the then governor advised the Football Association unify of both countries to unify. The unification led to the formation of Ghana Amateur Football Association (GMFA). In 1993, the formation of the GMFA resulted in the formation of the Ghana Football Association.

In the very first game played by the Black Stars of Ghana, the team wore green jersey tops coupled with white shorts. During the first Black Stars the team played barefooted.

However, as time went on, there was a request for boots which resulted in the team wearing boots to play after a suggestion made by the first squad.

The first international game played by the Black Stars was against the Nigerian national team. They were played in home and away legs on ten different occasions with Nigeria dominating in terms of wins.
