Party politics has always been one of the surest ways to nurture one’s political career. Inter party affairs does not come without the internal wrangling and factions especially, in the run up to electing party leaders or executive. As far as party structure and is concerned, the grassroot which represents the base of the party play a major decisive role when it comes to the electoral outcomes in times like this. For the independent minded individuals, the focus is mainly on who their favourites are, hence their support for such aspirants seeking the vote of delegates to be elected to occupy certain positions in their parties.
Already, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has begun the process of constituting a formidable party leadership as part of the most important activities going into the 2024 general elections with the slogan “BREAKING THE 8”. This process is also a constitutional requirement upon the expiration of the four year tenure of the current parry leadership. It obvious based on facts available that, key national officers like the current national chairman Hon. Freddie Blay and the National Organizer Sammy Awuku have decided not to seek reelection in the upcoming national delegates conference.
In this article, the focus is on the role of the national organiser position in the NPP leadership. This has been the officer occupied by one of the finest and young politicians in the party. Undoubtedly, the personality of the outgoing national organizer in the person of Sammy Awuku is one that can be admired by many. Rising from the position of a Deputy Communications Director, National Youth Organizer and currently National Organiser, Sammy Awuku has earned an enviable reputation for himself over the years. His popularity alone did not account for his success. Beyond his personality, Sammy Awuku has set a standard against which many political marketers may want to measure aspiring National Organisers and whoever finally succeeds him.
In as much as delegates would always find reasons for their choice of aspirants, there is the need for a proper reminder of the fact that, if the NPP really wants to “break the 8” then there is the need to have the types of Sammy Awuku at the forefront. Whoever succeeds him should have what it takes to command respect and dignity. To National Organiser position goes beyond touring the 16 regions and 275 constituencies across the country. There is absolutely a lot of work to do than merely appearing on set to defend the party especially in times like this when the party is desperately pushing very hard to retain power for the third term.
Everyone knows what goes into winning elections in Ghana. The New Patriotic Party is very much aware of the hurdles that they need to cross before December 7, 2024. As such, I believe the party will not like to put themselves in a situation that would make it more problematic for them to bring their message before Ghanaians in 2024. And the kinds of individuals who occupy the high offices at National Headquarters of the party is very important.
It may be easier for some individuals to be elected to the high offices of the party but that will not simply and possibly translate into votes. It will take hard work, dedication and a lot of zeal to be able to maintain the fortunes of the party in the next general elections.
From an independent minded individuals like us who have keen interest in the politics our country taking into considerations all the dynamics of party politics, I can confidently say that the New Patriotic Party particularly delegates need to as a matter of concern ensure that the new crop of leaders are the best for the party in the circumstances they find themselves. Despite that the New Patriotic Party continues to be a formidable party in this Fourth Republic, they cannot take things for granted. Once again for a reminder, the NPP needs to acknowledge the fact that breaking the 8 goes beyond the election of those who can afford to pay huge sums of money to delegates. Instead, there are very crucial tasks to be performed, ahead of the next general elections.
