On Tuesday in Accra, Nsoatreman FC defeated Tamale City FC to secure historic promotion to the Ghana Premier League. The Brong Ahafo club required an extra-time winner to win 2-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium and earn promotion to the top division for the first time in their history.
After concluding the season with the identical points total and head-to-head record, Nsoatreman FC and Tamale City met in a play-off.
Tamale City, led by former Black Stars midfielder Hamza Mohammed, were confident of becoming the second club from the Northern Regional capital to play in the Ghana Premier League after Real Tamale United, but they faced a tough opponent in Nsoatreman, who deservedly won with an impressive performance.
Samuel Ofori scored a close-range goal after 56 minutes to give Nsoatreman the lead, but it only lasted seven minutes before Tamale City equalized. Referee Daniel Laryea awarded Bismark Asare a penalty, which he comfortably put home.
In ordinary time, neither team was able to find a victory, requiring extra time. In the 98th minute, Nsoatreman’s Charles Asante scored the game-winning goal. Elmina Sharks, WAFA, and Techiman Eleven Wonders have been relegated, while Nsoatreman joins Kotoku Royals and Samartex as promoted teams.
