The 2021/2022 season of the Ghana Premier League has successfully ended. It was a season full of surprises. We have seen the best and the worst that were on offer. Generally, everything was successful albeit with a few hiccups here and there. Things could have been done better to make the league more attractive. There are a few things I have noted that must be corrected if our league must move forward.
The standard of refereeing has been better than last season but still leaves much to be desired. It can be better. We must ensure that every gadget they need to make their job easier is provided for them. We don’t have VAR and goal-line technology here hence some decisions become difficult for them to make. Also, they should be properly renumerated.
The GFA must also ensure they get a sponsor for the league. It will reduce the already heavy burden the clubs are carrying. The match-fixing scandals that have rocked our league in recent times haven’t helped at all. Sponsors will now be sceptical about our league. It doesn’t help in promoting our football.
Also, we must strive to pay our players well. If they are paid well, they will stay and develop properly before moving abroad. I was watching a video of a premier league club Eleven Wonders arriving at a game venue in a tricycle. That was so embarrassing.
Finally, let’s improve the status of our match venues. Some of the venues are just not good. We can’t be showing such venues on TV. If all the clubs can’t upgrade their stadiums to a good standard, let us select a few venues, upgrade them to international standards and play all our matches there. It will help with the video coverage and give us great publicity. Let us all strive and make our league better.
