GPL Week 34: Elmina Sharks, WAFA And Techiman Eleven Wonders Relegated From GPL After Poor Season

Elmina Sharks, West African Football Academy, WAFA and Techiman Eleven Wonders have been relegated from the Ghana Premier League after completing 2021/22 season as the last three clubs at the bottom of the table.

Elmina Sharks have not enjoyed the best of football this season as they languished at the bottom from the end of the first round of the season. Host of factors have been cited as reasons behind their dismal displays this season. There have been instances of several changes at the dugout as some prominent coaches were hired to salvage the situation but had to exit because of lack of motivation. The Elmina based team kicked off the season with Odartey Lamptey as the head coach, but he left along the way and Mallam Yahaya was brought on board. He left after steering the club in few matches. In came former Berekum Chelsea, Bibiani Gold Stars coach Kobbina Amissah. The experienced gaffer guided Elmina Sharks to promotion but he left after citing poor working conditions. He guarded the team to beat Asante Kotoko at home. In their final game today, they lost 2:1 to Accra Great Olympics in Elmina. They end the season with 22 points and will play in Zone 2 of the Division One League.

West African Football Academy, WAFA, had a stuttering start to the season and have paid for the price as they bid final goodbye to the elite division. A lackluster first round condemned them to table’s bottom, which became extremely arduous to turn around in the second round. They tried to make amends in the second round of the season but that was not enough to restore their lost confidence and status. They complete the season with 35 points after losing by a lone goal at Karela. They join Zone 2 of the Division One League.

Techiman Eleven Wonders have had an ailing season and could not withstand the heat. They dropped points at home and away, losing many points that could confirm that stay in the league. Their home win over Accra Hearts of Oak could not change the dynamics on the league table as they exit with 40 points after beating Aduana Stars 2:1 at Techiman. They could have retained Premier League status if they had added few points to their accumulated. Wins for Real Tamale United and King Faisal sunk them deep into the ditch. They join Zone One of the Division One League.
