The Mensa Otabil-National Cathedral Brouhaha And Hon. Okudzeto Ablakwa’s New Role

The heated debate and the brouhaha surrounding the controversial 5,000-seater auditorium National Cathedral is on; and catching the headlines almost everyday.

The so-called interdenominational Christian cathedral; which was ‘master-minded’ by the president of Ghana, President Nana Addo, is currently under construction in the capital of Ghana (Accra).

The constructions of the Cathedral is one single project, that has generated so much heated debates in Ghana since its initial stages. And as it stands now, the National Cathedral brouhaha will not to be ending anytime soon.

The debate on the Cathedral (just like the controversial e-levy), got Ghanaians divided; whiles a section of the population are rallying their support for its construction, others also opposed to it; their reason being that, the current state of the Ghanaian economy, does not demand the construct of a National Cathedral.

Many notable Ghanaians; the members of the clergy, members of parliament etc, also joined the heated National Cathedral debate. One person, who stands tall in the ‘heat’, and fighting strongly against the construction of the National Cathedral is Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament (MP), for the people of North Tongu constituency in the Volta Region.

Honorable Samuel Okudzeto , since the initial stages of the ‘Cathedral brouhaha’, played an active role in the fight against it. His voice was heard almost everyday on social media and in the news, speaking against the cathedral.

In recent times, the North Tongu MPs voice became even louder, following the claims, Pastor Mensa Otabil,(Leader of International Central Gospel Church-ICGC), has resigned from the National Cathedral board of trustees.

Hon. Ablakwa has since been playing a role that looks like a ‘spoke person’ for Pastor Mensa Otabil…and making more revelations about his involvement with the National Cathedral Construction.

In his first revelation, the North Tongu MP; through a post on his Twitter page stated that, the ICGC pastor; “Pastor Mensa Otabil, resigned last year (from the National Cathedral board of trustees), yet his image and profile was still on the National Cathedral’s website”.

Honorable Ablakwa again reveal that, “Checks reveals that, his (Pastor Otabil’s) name has been deleted. After exposing another layer of deception relating to the grossly misleading claim on the website of the national cathedral, that Pastor Mensa Otabil was still a member of the Board of Trustees; I can now reveal that, last night, Govt quietly took out Pastor Otabil, from the website”.

In his post, Honorable Ablakwa shared a photograph, showing the members of the previous and the current board of trustees of the National Cathedral.

Again in his latest comment; on the Mensa Otabil-National Cathedral brouhaha, the North Tongu MP has condemned the National Cathedral Secretariat, following their recent comment about Pastor Mensah Otabil’s involvement with the National Cathedral.

In a statement release on Friday 17, June 2022, the National Cathedral Secretariat stated that, Pastor Mensa Otabil was never a part of the National Cathedral board; and that, though he was appointed as part of the 13-member Board of Trustees, he indicated to the board, that he will not be able to give the needed attention to the project, “and thus would not want to be registered as a director of the “.

Reacting to this, Hon Ablakwa said, the National Cathedral Secretariat must apologize to Pastor Mensa Otabil, for saying was never a member of the Board of Trustees; and also for using his name and image on its promotional materials for all these years.

Speaking on in an interview on Citi TV’s program, ‘Eyewitness News’, Hon Ablakwa claimed that, the National Cathedral secretariat “deliberately used Mensa Otabil’s name to show up the credibility and image of the project, and must therefore apologize to him, since the secretariat now says he was never a part of the board”.

Ablakwa added that, “You know that he is not on a member… neither has he recused himself, yet you keep him on your website actively as a member of the Board of Trustees, but all the engagements you had all over the world, he is always mentioned and highlighted. They have not been fair to Pastor Mensa Otabil. They owe him an apology”.

Again; speaking like a personal assistant or spoke person for Pastor Otabil, Mr. Ablakwa said, “I was expecting a sincere apology, that they’ve been exposed and there was an attempt to clearly use the name of the Pastor, and others to shore up the credibility and the image of this project; and it has clearly been exposed, so they are sorry. To say that he [Mensa Otabil] was never really a member of the board of trustees, and it was an administrative lapse, doesn’t cut it”.

Spoke-persons as we know, are persons who are chosen to speak officially for someone, a group or an . So far, with the role Hon Ablakwa is playing; his comments and revelation about Pastor Mensa Otabil, and his relation to the National Cathedral projects, appears to us, like he knows so much about him, and that, he can be likened to ‘Mensa Otabil’s spoke person’.
