Otumfuo Atenehene Calls For Constitutional Amendment To Move The Country Forward.

Theatre Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II’s Atenehene Nana Boakye Yiadom Atonsa II has stressed the need for the country’s judiciary sector and for that matter government to take a critical look into some parts of the 1992 constitution that hardly favours the growth of the country and amend them for the benefit of Ghanaians.

Speaking to the correspondent King Amoah in an interview in Kumasi, Nana Atonsa II who also doubles as the chief of Denanse a town along the Kumasi-Offinso road in the Ashanti Region observed that the 1992 constitution has though helped to govern the country in diverse ways, some clauses therein doesn’t favour the economy to develop.

The chief cited the manner in which appointments of Mmdce’s are given by the President after which the Assemblymembers would be finally voting and swear them into offices.

Adding that such system of appointment making drains government coffers and it needs a policy that could reverse it.

That was not all, Nana also called for the annulment of the ex-gratia packages where huge sums of monies are paid out to parliamentarians every four years after service.

The chief asked about how much does the government pays to teachers, nurses among other public workers as their end of service benefits after working for more than 30 to 50 years.

Atenehene further spoke against the criminal laws and the alleged freedom given to murderers, kidnappers, human traffickers among others to engage the services of lawyers to defend them.

ln most cases delay in proceedings encourage offenders to advance their criminal activities or run away from justice, the chief hinted.

Stressing that it is now time where some sections in the judiciary system should be amended to help judges to undertake their national assignments without criticism from the public.

Calling for National Policy concept where the traditional authorities would be given a role to help shape the society, Nana Atonsa II alleged that some portions in the 1992 constitution are outmoded and does not contribute to any meaningful agenda.

Hence his call on the government to collaborate with the relevant agencies to amend the constitution for the benefit of Ghanaians.
