Paul Adom Otchere defends Council of State’s decision to refer requester to Metro TV for documents

The issue of Togbe Afede’s rejection of ex-gratia has been one of the most popular cases in the History of the country. It was not surprising that the former Council of State member was praised by many Ghanaians for his selfless gesture.

Readers can recall how Paul Adom Otchere did an editorial that seemed to have challenged the Paramount chief’s kind act. After Paul Adom’s presentation, he was lambasted by a section of the general public for his unfavorable remarks but this has not stopped him from commenting about Togbe.

Paul has further expressed his satisfaction on comments made by the current Speaker of parliament on the issue of the ex-gratia. He applauded the Speaker of Parliament for how Alban Bagbin supported the concept of paying ex-gratia to MPs.

On Thursday,16th June 2022, Paul also defended the council of state for an action that it took when a request was made for them to release the evidence of meetings attended by its members. Readers can recall how the Council of State mentioned that the same documents were already provided to Metro TV and therefore the requesters can go to the TV station for the documents.

Paul Adom Otchere, however, made reference to the Right to Information Bill and read sections that defended the actions of the council of state for directing the requester to the TV station. Paul Adom explained that, it would have been problematic if everyone is provided the bulky 200 paged documents and so he did not expect the requester to feel offended because the request was made by quoting the RTI. Paul further explained that the situation could have been different if the RTI was not quoted. Paul Added,”If you had left the discretion to the Council of State, the case might have been different”. What are your thoughts on the ongoing discussion?
