Following the agitations and subsequent misunderstanding that occurred yesterday at the Islamic Senior High School, parents stormed the school premises to move their wards home. They are not happy with the turn of events on the school campus. They feel their children will be safer at home following the confrontation between the police and the students. It has been alleged that live bullets were fired during the chaos but the police administration has denied that. They only fired warning shots to deter the students.
The genesis of the whole problem was that the students blocked a section of the road for lack of speed ramps. According to the students, accidents involving cars knocking down students and teachers are becoming too frequent. The authorities haven’t done anything about the situation. They had to block the road to register their displeasure. The police officers who were dispatched to the scene to try and control the situation rather worsened it after firing pepper sprays and tear gas at the students causing about 25 of them to be hospitalised.
I have always said that this country is not proactive. We choose to rather react to issues. Should we have waited for it to get to this stage? Aren’t the authorities aware of the situation around the school? You will be amazed at the speed with which the speed ramps the students were agitating for will be constructed. We should go beyond this kind of thing. It won’t help us.
