The story of the MoMo transaction cannot be told without mentioning the activities of fraudsters who attempt to dupe subscribers as with all other transactions and the countermeasures introduced.
At least, more than fifty percent of Mobile Money users across the country have suffered one way or the other in the hands of fraudsters.
They have used so many means to empty the accounts of some Momo users without being caught by the telecommunication network providers.
Day in and day out, they keep on changing their style of making people fall into their trap.
The new way fraudsters have adopted to get access to your momo account.
I had a call from a man yesterday,(on this number: 0592945749) who claimed he made a wrong cash-in transaction.
He said in Twi that “I’ve sent about GHS 590.00 to your momo number, which was not meant for you. Instead of calling you to send it back to me, I called the MTN Office and complained to them”.
After he did that, according to him, the Attendant told him that he has mistakenly blocked my momo account so he should call me back, and take my momo number and pin code to reactivate my account.Â
The message below was sent to me before he called:Â
“Cash In rèceived for GHS 590.00 from GOOD BETTER BEST  ENTERPRIS DANSOMAN Transaction, ID.223244241fee is .00”.Â
When he called and asked if I received any message, I pretended as if I had not received anything yet. This was because, the cash-in message was sent by a normal MTN number (first sign of momo fraud).
He asked me if I’ve received any message saying my momo account has been blocked, and I answered “no” (which was also intentional). He begged me to call him back immediately I receive the message, and I said “okay”.
He sent the message again, just after the call ended.
The message he sent was:
“Your MOMO has been BLOCKED from mtn heard office due to wrong trans…recieved THANK YOU”
I quickly rebooted my phone, and checked my momo balance, realizing everything was intact. My next step after checking my balance, was to report the number which he called through (0549437969) to 1515.
This incident happened between 3:00 pm to 3:20 pm.
• My first indication of fraud was the number through which the messages were sent.Â
Note: MTN or any other telecommunication network will not call you and ask for your pin code.
An official call from MTN will only be from this number: 0244300000
• My second indication was the broken English which was written.
Below are some 3 reliable ways of reporting an MTN Mobile Money Fraud case.
1. Send an SMS To 1515: 1515 is a special MTN code for mobile Money reports. For this option, kindly type all that happened, plus the phone number involved in the heist as well as the date and time of the incident.
