After every season, teams reflect on the ended journey and take corrective actions in an attempt to solidify the squad for the next season. This year’s routine for Asante Kotoko may be affected by three solid factors: Champions, Africa Campaign and Time.
As Champions, Kotoko would love to defend the title next season. It is an open secret that defending champions need to overwork before they can retain the honorary trophy.
Since Kotoko won the league, they automatically get the nod to represent Ghana in the CAF Champions League. This tournament has its own burdens on teams.
This year differs from other ones due to the timing of the World Cup event. Most competitions have been postponed to either earlier or later dates. As a result, this year’s CAF CL preparations begin as soon as possible. Representatives are required to submit their team squads for the competition before the end of this very month.
All the above raised points may play a role in Kotoko’s recruitments this transfer window.
Looking at the team squad list for the 2021/22 season, Asante Kotoko have only 3 Goalkeepers left – Danlad, Baah and Rafiu. Are these men reliable and sufficient for Kotoko’s Africa campaign? Even if they are, how does their contracts contribute to whether they stay or not?
Truth be told, Asante Kotoko can rely on the potentials of their current goalkeepers. Both Danlad and Kwame Baah have experiences on African stages as they have been involved with the various national teams. Abdul Rafiu sure is one for the future.
However, these reliable ones don’t have resolved contract issues with the club. For Danlad Ibrahim, he signed a 3-year deal in 2019. That implies he still have one year on his contract. The problem is no club will take the chance to bet on a player who certainly has no future with the club, especially on a big stage like the CL which can raise market values.
Similarly, Kwame Baah has few months left on his contract. It doesn’t seem like he’ll renew due to the lack of playing time.
In the event one or both goalkeepers fallout, who would you recommend the Porcupine Warriors to sign? Would you prefer an experienced one or a young, enterprising one? local or foreigner?
