Hon. John-Peter Amewu Finally Break Silence On The Tema-Mpakadan Rail line

Honorable John-Peter Amewu, the Minister for Railway Development; after some times of total silence, has finally spoken.

Honorable Amewu, who is currently working on the Tema-Mpakadan railway line, has issued some updates on the current state of the project.

The Tema-Mpakadan railway project, which is under construction by AFCONS Infrastructure Limited, is about 97.9 kilometers of railway line; from Tema in the Greater Accra Region, to Mpakadan, a town in the North Tongu District in the Volta Region.

Giving updates on progress of the project, the Honorable Minister said he is confident, that the railway line will be completed by the end of 2022.

According to him, despite some delays in the completion of the project, works are still ongoing, and the project would soon to be completed.

Addressing the media after inspecting the Volta Rail Bridge, Honorable John-Peter Amewu said, “We’re hoping that by the end of the year, we should be seeing a practical completion. What we intend to do is to procure two fairly used [trains], to ply between Tema and Mpakadan for passengers”.

Mr. Amewu, who is also the Member of Parliament for Hohoe Constituency, added that, “We are aware of the heavy traffic between Afienya and Tema, and so if we are able to put those vehicles on the track, it is going to take that pressure off the road, and make commuters comfortable. We are working towards that, and it will be done shortly”.

According to the Government, “The Tema-Mpakadan rail line, is part of the 1,000km Ghana-Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project, which will link Ghana from Tema to Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou. The two countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in January 2017 in Ouagadougou to kick-start the project”.

The plan also revealed that, “some 800km of the railway line will be in Ghana’s territory, while the remaining 200km will be on Burkinabe soil. The project, when completed, will be a modern, standard gauge rail line”.
