The ‘Heat’ Surrounding The LGBT In Ghana Has Restarted

The anger of Honorable Samuel Nartey George, Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram Constituency has ‘risen’ again, following the alleged promotion of LGBTQI activities through a billboard, which was seen along the Accra-Tema Motorway.

Some few days ago, the heated debates about the popular LGBTQ+, have risen again, after about a year of total silence.

The ‘heat’ started, during proceedings on the floor of parliament on 8 June 2022, when the Minority MPs, re-started the LGBTQ+ bill brouhaha, saying, the Chairman of the committee working on the LGBT bill, is deliberately slowing down work on the bill, “with no clear sign of progress for more than a year after its introduction”.

The Minority warned that, they would start blocking the passage of government bills, if the LGBTQI bill is not worked on with dispatch in the house. Again on the LGBTQ bill, one of the sponsors of the bill, Honorable Samuel Nartey George (MP for Ningo-Prampram), has issued a 24 hour ultimatum to authorities to pull down a billboard on the Accra-Tema Motorway, that supposedly promotes LGBTQI activities in the country.

Hon. Sam George stated that, “Over the weekend, our attention was drawn to an illegality that flies in the face of the Constitution of Ghana; Articles 11 and 26, which talks about Ghana’s cultural sovereignty. We noticed that a billboard promoting the activities of the LGBTQ activities have been mounted along the motorway”.

He explained that; “As sponsors of the bill before Parliament, and as members of Parliament who represent the aspirations and will of Ghanaians, we have deemed it important to show up here today to register in the strongest way our displeasure, discomfort and abhorrence for this unholy, unculturable and untraditional advertisement that has been put up on this road”.

Honorable Sam George added that, “We are calling on the Inspector General of Police to immediately, within the next 24 hours, to carry out the necessary security operations to ensure that, this billborad which is an affront to the Constitution is taken down in conjunction with the MCE for the area”.

The LGBTQI+ bill, which is currently before parliament, will criminalize LGBTQI+ advocacy and jail LGBTQ+ people for at least five years, when passed into law.

The sponsors of the bill are, Honorable Samuel Nartey Geaorge (MP for Ningo-Prampram), Honorable Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini (MP for Tamale North), Honorable Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor (MP for South Dayi), Honorable Della Adjoa Sowah (MP for Kpando),

The rest are Honorable Helen Adjoa Ntoso (MP for Krachi West), Honorable Rita Naa Odoley Sowah (MP for La Dadekotopon), Honorable John Ntim Fordjour (MP for Assin South) and Honorable Emmanuel Bedzrah (MP for Ho West).
