Readers can recall how the Agbogbomefia of Asogli State in a letter dated 6th June 2022 clarified why he refunded the ex-gratia amount of GHS 365,392.67. In the said letter, readers can reminisce how the former member of the Council of State explained that he rejected the payment because of his “general abhorrence of huge Ex-gratia and other outrageous benefits to people who have by their own volition offered to serve our poor country”.
Many financial analysts, academics, and the general public have applauded Togbe for this action. Readers can recall how Dr. Owusu Sarkodie, an Economics Lecturer at the University of Ghana, also appreciated the former member of the Council of State for setting an example for various office holders. He asked that the Council of state members should live a modest life. He explained that there were various allowances that needed to be canceled to make room for various projects. Many have interpreted Togbe’s action as a way of telling Ghanaians that the issue of ex-gratia should be re-looked at.
On Good Evening Ghana, Paul Adom Otchere explained that Article 71 of the constitution of Ghana should be blamed for the said salaries paid to Council of State members. He mentioned that he did not see why Togbe should refund the money.
Many Ghanaians have descended on Paul for his statements and have asked why he is only interested in his pocket.
For example, Emmanuel Bart-Plange asked Paul if he loves the country. Emmanuel stated that Togbe did the right thing by refunding the payment to enable the government to build a classroom block for children studying under trees.
Isaac Tee also described Paul’s editorial as a needless one. Richmond Mortey was also not impressed with Paul’s statements and he made reference to how a similar amount was used to purchase a Christmas Tree under Paul’s watch.
Yaw Selby also described Paul’s presentation as unpatriotic.
Meanwhile, the secretary of the Asogli State Council has referred to Paul’s accusations on the show as incorrect and misleading. The secretary has further explained that Togbe’s rejection of the amount was non-partisan. He added that Togbe believes that senior citizens should not be paid Ex- Gratia by the poor country for part-time work.
