Togbe Afede XIV has been trending all over the news today for his humanitarian act. As you may have known, Togbe Afede XIV has returned a whooping sum of over GHC 300k back to the government. This sum of money was accredited to his account as ex-gratio for serving as the Chairman of the Council of State. In a letter issued by Togbe Afede, he gives justifications or reasons for returning such an amount back to government.
According to him, his job as Chairman of the Council of State was a part-time job of which he received salary, allowances and several other benefits. He also indicated that it was an honour for him to serve on the council and he really appreciates that. Togbe Afede also indicated that it does not sit well with his conscience to take such an amount especially during these hard times.
Ghanaians have welcomed this with varying opinions and views. Latest amongst them is P. K Sarpong who is a member of the NPP. According to Mr. Sarpong, what Togbe Afede did was populism and was not in a good interest. He accused Togbe on the grounds that an appointment letter was assigned to him before assuming office and it stated clearly that an ex-gratia would be given him and he still went ahead to assume the position as Chairman. Mr. Sarpong and others also criticised Togbe for taking ex-gratia when he was a member of the board of Bank Of Ghana and other key note positions he had held.
Upon all these critique a lot of Ghanaians are still commending him for doing so well by acknowledging the times we are in. What Togbe did will be remembered by all Ghanaians considering the times we are in and his humanitarian act.
