Government Uses GH¢12.4 Million Of Petroleum Revenue To Settle Judgement Debt

The recent report from the Public Interest and Accountability Committee (PIAC) has detailed how the government has used GH¢12.4 million of petroleum revenue to settle judgement debt. The committee revealed that the government for the first time since oil production commenced, used petroleum revenue to pay judgement debt.

The said GH¢12.4 million was used to settle debts in various sectors, roads and railways. The settling of the debt was a good move but the PIAC, however, described the occurrence as unacceptable.

A 2021 report that assessed the management of petroleum revenue revealed that the Finance Ministry made a disbursement of the Annual Budget Funding Amount (ABFA) to the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) but there was no report on the utilization of the money.

The report added that the Roads and Highways Ministry disbursed an amount of GH¢787,618,706.73 to carry out improvements, rehabilitation, asphaltic overlay, upgrading, and other major maintenance works on road infrastructure.
