Should Public Flogging Of People Who Commit Immoral Acts Be Encouraged Or Discouraged?

Following the viral video of the public flogging of a guy and a lady, this article seeks to examine whether public flogging of people who commits immoral acts should be encouraged or discouraged.

Their crime was that they engaged in a sexual intercourse which was filmed and later got circulated on social media.

On social media, some people asserted that, such punishment will deter people from engaging in sexual immorality and hence it must be encouraged. They are of the view that in the olden days where society meted punishment on victims of sexual immorality, the rate of infedility was negligible. Based on this they believe the flogging of the victims is a step in the right direction.

Why It Should Be Discouraged Despite Their Argument

Of course, it is reprehensible watching this video of the young lady and gentleman in this act. Notwithstanding the worrying nature of the video, I find it difficult associating myself with the public flogging of the two.

Morality is a subject for the saints. Saints are rare in today’s world. Flogging them in public ought not to have been the solution.

Several questions come to mind. How did the video come out? Was it leaked, and if it was, who did it? Or it was leaked by one of the two persons or someone stole the phone and leaked it?

To be able to appreciate the whole debacle, the above questions need answering so that the right person could be held accountable.

I am no lawyer, but if there are laws in our statute books which penalize such acts, they ought to have been activated instead of this public spectacle.

The traditional authority, if it’s true that they saw to the flogging of the duo, should find other means of correcting people who are captured in such acts.

I do not subscribe to the narrative that the traditional authority has this as a by-law since it is not in tandem with the laws of the country.

Let’s not encourage these public floggings of people. At best, there maybe laws frowning upon such leakages.

There is this nagging question; what crime did they commit engaging in this act when they are at the age of consent or adults who are at liberty to practice this?

It is not every immoral act that is unlawful and the sooner we see some of these acts in that light, the better for us. We should move on from yesterday’s code of ethics and embrace those of the 21st century which are found in our laws.
