NPP Tradition: Bawumia As Candidate For 2024? – Detailed Analysis

President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo is enjoying his last term as President of Ghana and flag bearer for the New Patriotic Party and will not be representing in the 2024 general elections. This means that the New Patriotic Party needs to find someone competent to replace him. In the past few months, we have heard rumours of separation in the party regarding who becomes the next flag bearer leading to the Alan Kyeramanteng and Bawumia camp; indicating some backing Alan and others backing the current vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

In this article, I will be giving a detailed analysis to why Bawumia should be the right option ahead of the 2024 elections. Heard of the Dankwah-Busia-Dombo tradition?. The NPP since the initiation of the fourth Republic have evidenced that the selection of candidates is based on the tradition of the party. The Dankwah-Busia-Dombo tradition dates back from 1947 through the formation of the United Gold Coast Convention by JB Dankwah and the merger with Busia (National Liberation Movement) and Dombo (Northern People’s Party) in 1957 to form the United Party due to the “Avoidance of Discrimination Act” passed by the Nkrumah government not to allow the formation of parties on tribal basis. This was the root of the New Patriotic Party. Busia represents the Ashanti’s, Dankwah the Akyem and Dombo the Northerners.

Looking at the candidate trends of the NPP from 1996, an Ashanti, Former President John Agyekum Kuffuor led the party to victory in 2000 and 2004. In 2008, an Akyem, the current President Nana Addo Dankwah Akuffo Addo, led the party until it won the elections in 2016 and subsequently in 2020. Is it now the turn of the Northerner?

Apart from candidate preference on tradition basis, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has proved himself as the most competent person to lead the NPP into the 2024 elections. As somebody who was new to the political scenes, lost the 2008 and 2012 elections but came back strongly in the 2016 elections, his hard work helped humiliate former President John Dramani Mahama in the 2016 elections as the NPP defeated the NDC by over a million votes. His dominance in the campaign scenes during the 2020 elections caused the victory of the NPP.

Undoubtedly, I predict Bawumia the flag bearer for the New Patriotic Party ahead of the 2024 elections.
