Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, the Founder of the Danquah Institute, a policy think tank, is riled by the lawlessness of a youth band in the Upper West Regional capital, Wa, who grabbed and publicly beat two lovers, caught in a leaked video having sex with sticks, labeling their action as insane.
He simply cannot rationalize why anybody should arrogate to themselves the power to punish two consenting adult lovers, who decide to make a video of themselves, by publicly flogging them.
He tweeted on Wednesday, June 1, “Two consenting adults (man and woman) decide to film themselves having sex, apparently.
The tape goes viral and some in the community believe they have a responsibility to flog the couple publicly? Insane”.
Some angry youth in Wa are seen captured on video footage making rounds on social media parading the two romantically young adults in front of the Wa Chief’s palace and publicly caning them.
Their crime is that they made a video of themselves having sexual intercourse and this had gone viral on social media.
The decision by the youth of the town to take the law into their own hands has been greeted with widespread condemnation.
Abdul Fataou Daud, the assembly member for the Tagyiri electoral area, has joined in the chorus of public flogging of the 20-year old tricycle driver and his 18-year sweetheart.
He has vowed to work with members of the unit committee to fish out those who publicly beat with sticks the two romantically involved young adults to make them answer for what they did.
The perpetrators would not be allowed to get away with their lawlessness.
The assembly member said he was not aware of any law in the country “that is saying that if a video of that nature is on social media, they should call them and beat them with sticks as they did.”
