For attacking and robbing a woman of her bag containing a key, hand gel, tissue and Samsung Galaxy phone, a 26-year old man is going to serve a jail term of 12 years as punishment.
The woman, Sophia Johnson, has been cutting and styling people’s hair professionally in Dansoman, Accra, and she was walking down a street in Dansoman to meet a friend, when she was attacked by Nathaniel Owusu and one other person, now on the run.
Police Chief Inspector Emmanuel Ohene Agyei told an Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Ellen Ofei Ayeh, where Nathaniel had been sent to stand criminal trial for robbery, that the incident happened at about 11pm.
Sophia was walking down the street of Dansoman Kit Kat to the Exhibition Roundabout with a bag containing her Samsung Galaxy phone, key, hand gel and tissue tied to her waist, when suddenly Nathaniel and his criminal pal, riding on an unregistered motorbike, stopped and ordered her to surrender her bag and everything on her, as Nathaniel, who was the pillion passenger jumped down from the motorbike.
She would not surrender without a fight and engaged him in a fierce struggle amid shouts for help. Police Chief Inspector Ohene Agyei said Nathaniel landed a hefty punch to the left side of her head and snapped the bag from her waist.
People attracted by her shouts for help managed to seize Nathaniel as he fell in his attempt to jump on the motorbike and flee. His criminal pal would not wait to be apprehended and rode away, leaving Nathaniel to his fate.
Nathaniel was subsequently taken to the Dansoman Police Station, where after police investigation, he was criminally charged with robbery. He pleaded not guilty, but the court found him guilty of the crime.
Ghanaians have been alarmed at the increasing rate of crime in the country.
