A woman who was a victim of domestic violence shares her story of what she went through in the hands of her husband. Mukami, a mother of two, grew up in a poor family, her parents died when she was a teenager, and she dropped out of school to work as a house help.
Mukami was working as a house maid when she met her husband. They dated for six months before she moved to his village with him. That was when he revealed his true colours to her. He became violent and started beating her, drinking alcohol, staying up late and womanising.
It got to a point where he stopped giving her money for food. One night, he came home late with his mistress and asked her to prepare food for her mistress. When she asked him for money, he beat her and threw her things outside. Mukami was going back to her father’s house when three men with guns stopped her and asked where she was going.
She explained to them her husband kicked her out. They asked her if she wanted them to go and kill her husband. She said no. They escorted her home and told her to continue to be prayerful because God had saved her.
