Before The Name Nigeria Was Given By Floral Shaw, She First Suggested Names Like… Check It Out.

Flora Shaw, a British journalist, is widely credited with the coinage of the name “Nigeria” to describe the “Niger Area,” which was then a territory administered by the Royal Niger Company.

The former name for Nigeria was the Royal Niger Company Territories. As funny and odd as it may sound It does not sound like a country name at all. In 1897, before the Nigerian name was given by Flora Shaw she first suggested other name like;

1. Royal Niger Company

2. Western Sudan

3. Niger Empire

4. Niger Sudan

5. Central Sudan

On 1 January 1900, the British Empire created the Southern Nigeria Protectorate and the Northern Nigeria Protectorate. In 1914, the area was formally united as the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. Ultimately Nigeria was named after the Niger River, from a native term “Ni Gir” (meaning “River Gir”). The name has often been misinterpreted as derived from the Latin niger, a reference to the dark complexions of the inhabitants of the region.

The name Nigeria was replaced and preserved up until today. Surprisingly later, Floral Shaw got married to Lord Fredrick Lugard, a British administrator.
