The Upper East Regional House of Chiefs has blasted politicians, accusing them of pulling the strings and fanning the Bawku bloody chieftaincy conflict.
The chiefs say everything happening in Bawku has been orchestrated and remote-controlled by the politicians.
The President of the regional House of Chiefs, Pe Detundini Adiali Ayagitam III, said the politicians are the midwives who supported and supervised the delivery of the monster “we all have been forced to live with”.
He told a press briefing in Bolgatanga that who has legitimate title to the Bawku Skin is a matter that had been settled by the Supreme Court in 2003.
He added that the Apex Court affirmed the legitimacy of Naba Asigri Abugrago Azoka II. Pe Detundini Adiali Ayagitam said if the Mamprusis living in Bawku wanted to be involved in chieftaincy matters, the way forward was to select a suitable candidate for consideration by Naba Abugrago Azoka for enskinment as the Mamprusi Community Chief.
The Kusasi and the Mamprusi in Bawku have been locked in a bloody fight, which has left many killed.
The heavy deployment of soldiers and police officers has not muted the intermittent senseless shootings that have sent terrified residents fleeing in droves from the area to save their lives.
Ambrose Dery, the Interior Minister, has vowed to bring a closure to the insecurity. They are going to robustly and decisively deal with the situation.
He said “for now, nobody is able to tell when the shootings take place and who is doing it, whether it a product of the ethnic conflict around chieftaincy or terror acts by extremists.
That is why firm action by the security agencies is required to get the situation under control.”
Amadu Hamza, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Bawku, painted a very disturbing picture. He cast the situation as extremely scary with people brazenly displaying guns and ammo.
Bawku, he added, was imploding with teachers, nurses and the residents fleeing the place in droves to save their lives.
