Fixthecountry Conveynor Oliver Barker-Vormawor has asserted that Ghana will never develop if foreigners owns our mines and wells.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page Monday, 30th May 2022, Oliver wrote;
“I believe in the indigenization of our oil and mineral resources. Ghanaian businesses (not necessarily the State) must own those critical industries.Â
We will never develop if foreigners own our mines and our oil wells.”
He quizzed that he needs an evidence of one country that has developed the way we are doing it, by looking on for 95% of the critical economy to be owned by foreigners.”
The comments of Oliver Barker comes as a background to the pending Agyapa Deal. In August 2020, the government of Ghana proposed to sell the majority of its future gold royalties from mining leases to an offshore – Agyapa Royalties Ltd.
Under the plan, Ghana will assign a significant portion of its future gold mining royalties to the Agyapa in return for cash up front (estimated at approximately USD 500 million). The Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta recently announced that he might send the Agyapa deal to Parliament for approval after it was in initially withdrawn.
