Meet The Eminent Academic, Media Scholar And Activist, Professor Audrey Gadzekpo.

Audrey Sitsofe Gadzekpo is an eminent academic and media practitioner, with many years of experience in research, teaching and advocacy on media, issues and governance.

A Professor at the Department of Communication Studies, University of Ghana, Audrey Gadzekpo hails from Anyako in the Volta Region of Ghana.

She attended Achimota Primary School and had her senior high school education at Achimota School for her Ordinary Level Certificate and Ola Girls Senior High School, Ho for her Advanced Level Certificate.

Prof. Gadzekpo obtained a BA degree in English from University of Ghana, Master of Arts in Communications from Brigham Young University in Utah, USA and a Doctorate Degree in African Studies from University of Birmingham, UK.

Her career as a journalist began in America before she relocated to Ghana few months to the 1992 elections to cover the first ever elections of Ghana, transitioning into a democratic rule in the fourth republic. She wrote for the Chronicle, Mirror and at some point hosted Talking Point on Ghana Television and panelist on Joy FM.

She joined academia in 1993, and has since lectured at University of Ghana, and became Dean of the School of Information and Communication Studies.

Having served on boards and committees of the University, she is also on international editorial boards and has served as editor/co-editor of journals.

Prof. Gadzekpo is Vice Chair of the board of the Center for Democratic Development (CDD Ghana). She also serves on the boards of Solidaridad Continental Supervisory Board for Africa, STAR Ghana Foundation, GHACEM Foundation, Webster University Ghana Campus and Tema International School (TIS) amongst other institutions. She is also patron for the Alliance for Women in Media.

She has also served as board chair of Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), and served on other boards and commissions. This includes the National Media Commission (NMC), Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Ghana News Agency (GNA), Vodafone Foundation, Joyce Ababio College of Creative Design and Africa Literature Center in Zambia.

The Communications Expert has consulted on many communication/media related projects for organizations such as the Public Information Unit, United Nations Mission in Liberia, World Bank, UNICEF, UNESCO and UNDP. Others are the European Union, Electoral Commission of Ghana, Ghana Statistical Service amongst others.

She was also lead consultant for the National Risk Communication and Community Engagement Strategy for the COVID Pandemic in Ghana. She has also designed and facilitated workshops to support the media in Liberia and Gambia, and done similar for organizations both local and international to include the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), World Health Organization(WHO) and others.

Prof. Gadzekpo recently gave an inaugural lecture at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana on the title, Taking the Gown to Town; Reflections of a Scholar-Activist on Media in Ghana’s Democratic Journey.

This was attended by the creme de la creme and people from all walks of life, and has received applause and praise from many media practitioners.
