Ghana Premier League giants, AshantiGold Sporting Club have been demoted to division two league over a match fixing scandal. The ‘Aboakese’ team beat Inter Allies 7:0 in the 202-/2021 premier league season. This called for suspicion that something wrong had gone wrong somewhere. Investigation was initiated into the allegation and a case has been established that there was some level of manipulation in the game. Hashmin Musah admitted that he scored two own goals to spoil a bet.
Club President, Dr. Kwaku Frimpong and Chief Executive Officer, Emmanuel Frimpong have also received their fair share in the punishment. Dr Kwaku Frimpong has been banned for 10 years from all football realeted activities while his son, Emmanuel Frimpong has been banned for 8 years. Kumasi Asante Kotoko’s Richmond Lamptey has also been banned 30 months from football related activities after a decision by the Ghana Football Association’s disciplinary committee. Hashmin Musah has also been banned for 6 months from participating in all football related activities.
This is not the first time a match fixing scandal has hit Ghana Football. The match between Okwawu United and Nania F.C. was also said to have been fixed. While some say the punishments are harsh, others think it will help bring sanity to Ghana football.
