In Greek mythology, Medusa was one of the Gorgon sisters, Graeae, Echidna and Ladon and daughters of Phorcys and Ceto. They were all known to be dreadful in appearance and a glance at their faces instantly turned one into a stone. Medusa was an exception in her family until she incurred the wrath of the goddess Athena, either for due to her boastfulness or because of her forced affair with the sea god, Poseidon. She along with her sister’s, were transformed into vicious monsters with snakes for hair and she was killed by Perseus who used her slain but potent head as a weapon and later gifted it to Athena who attached it to her shield. The name Medusa means “guardian” and was the only mortal among the Gorgon sisters. She was also the only one among her sister’s who was born with the most beautiful face and this even attracted Poseidon.
Medusa had sworn an oath to serve Athena and thus had to keep her virginity till death but the great sea god, Poseidon couldn’t resist her and impregnated Medusa right in the temple of Athena. The goddess out of rage transformed the beautiful maiden into the famous Gorgon sister but made her the ugliest of them all as her sister’s had bronze and gold wings but she had only the ugly features of a human and a snake. The story of Medusa did not end with her death as after the great hero, Perseus had severed off her head, her two unborn children with Poseidon, Chyrsaor and Pegasus sprang from her neck.
As Perseus flew over Libya while returning to Seriphos, drops of Medusa’s blood fell to the ground and turned to snakes instantly and it’s believed that is the reason why the country abounds with snakes to this day. When he arrived in Seriphos, Perseus turned Polydectes and his savage islanders into stones and up to date, the island is known for it’s many rocks. After she had attached the head of Medusa to her shield, she took the in remaining part of Medusa’s blood and gave most of it to Ascelepius, who used the blood from her left side to kill and the blood from her right side to raise people from the dead.
