King Promise has garnered multiple nominations but no wins since his initial appearance on VGMA and subsequent win in 2019. King Promise addressed Berla Mundi on TV3 NewDay on the difficulties of winning foreign prizes but not being able to reproduce his success in his native country.
He stated that he and the board had never had any disagreements. He wouldn’t have provided that fantastic performance last weekend if it hadn’t been for that. “To be honest, I have no problems with the VGMA.
If I did, I wouldn’t be playing on that stage. I had no idea how the night would turn out. Obviously, everything went as they did. All I’m doing at the end of the day is making music and pushing the agenda. Which is Ghanaian music to the rest of the world.
“I’m not sure what the problem is, but my team and I will investigate to see if there is one.” King Promise feels that his foreign achievements should be reflected in his own kingdom, as their absence casts a pall over everything else.
“I’m from Ghana. It’s quite large when I travel and go on tours or other activities. I’ve won accolades like Best African Artiste in Nigeria and been nominated for mobile phones and other things. Then, when you get home, it’s kind of amusing.
You must own your territory if you want to take it to the world. So it certainly matters to me. However, that is not the primary goal for which I am striving. But, as you mentioned, it gets to the point where it becomes a problem,” he said to Berla Mundi.
The Ginger singer promises to investigate the situation. He hopes to examine himself and the system in order to figure out why, despite repeated nominations, the prizes have stopped coming. King Promise garnered four nominations at the recently concluded VGMA23, one for Artiste of the Year.
“I’m not sure if it’s me, the system, or something else. Maybe people think that I’m not close to a lot of people. I’m always in my corner. I’m not sure if that’s the problem. He concluded, “I’m still seeking for what the problem is since even I, myself, don’t know.”
