Sports Minister of Ghana, Mustapha Ussif has stated his position in relation to whether new players could play for Black Stars during 2022 FIFA World Cup. Mustapha Ussif is of the view that players who played for Ghana could be involved in other situations such as injury when the time is due, and will have to be replaced by a new player. Although he agrees that players that were involved in the qualifiers must be called but that cannot shut the door for new players especially when circumstances change.
“We cannot say only those who played the qualifiers must go. What if during that time the player is injured.” Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif explained on Ekosii sen on Asempa FM this afternoon.
The Sports Minister was however quick to assert that players who are committed will be contacted by the technical team. Mustapha Ussif believes players with dual citizenship willingly to play for Ghana must demonstrate commitment than just to be only interested in wearing the jersey to play at the World Cup.
“The technical team is working on getting Ghanaians who are committed to our nation. If they approach you and you think you can fight for Ghana , we will work with you but if you cannot then we look elsewhere. I leave that to the technical team.”
Having qualified Ghana to this year’s World Cup in Qatar, the future of the technical team has come up in various discussions. There has been an overwhelming call for their stay. Mustapha Ussif has confirmed their stay but added that discussions are currently underway as to how they will be able to work. The team led by Otto Addo will be at duty for Black Stars during the global competition.
“We qualified based on a good technical team we had. We are negotiating their terms. They have been maintained. Otto Addo will be our head coach. Chris Hughton is still technical advisor. At the World Cup this is the technical team we will see, Insha Allah.”
Black Stars of Ghana are part of African representatives for the impending World Cup. Ghana made it to the World Cup after eliminating arch rivals and neighbors Nigeria. Following the qualification, several names have been linked to the Black Stars. The team is tipped to make an impact at the global stage especially when the technical team will be maintained. There has been mixed reactions as to whether new players must come on board or same squad be maintained.
