Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and majority leader of Parliament, says he believes his “Grand Pa” John Dramani Mahama will not scrap the E-levy policy, as he stated in his “Ghana at Crossroads” talk.
He emphasizes that the previous president will only utilize the funds for the country’s development, just as President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo has done.
When the NDC won power from the previous NPP government, he told Okay FM’s ‘Ade Akye Abia’ program that they failed to abolish many money-making schemes enacted by the previous NPP government.
“The NDC promised to repeal the Communication Service Tax (CST) when they came to power, according to one of the parliamentary Hansards. “However, what did they do once they gained power?” he asked.
According to him, they raised it because they saw how helpful it was to the country’s progress.
“Ghana, like the industrialized countries, cannot become overly reliant on other countries that use taxes to expand their economies. We need to figure out how to tax and use the money to help the country flourish. Everybody wants their own road built when we travel to cabinet meetings and other official functions, while others demand basic social facilities.
“How can we progress as a country if we are constantly looking to the west for financial assistance? To be able to meet our own infrastructure demands, we should be a self-sufficient country “he insisted.
I’m convinced my “Grand Pa” John Mahama’s obsessive drive for power is forcing him to make promises he can’t even keep, he remarked.
