Did You Know Nana Akomea Was One Of The Brains Behind Kyekyekule; His Career Aside Politics And More

An Advertiser, Communications Expert and Politician, Nana Akomea is currently the Managing Director of Ghana’s State Transport Company (STC).

Early Life

From Nsutam in the Eastern Region of Ghana where he was born on August 5, 1961, Nana Akomea started school in his hometown till age 4 when he moved to Accra to join his father.

He lived in different suburbs in Accra from Osu RE to Adabraka, Lartehbiokoshie Estate before they eventually settled at North Kaneshie.

Education

Nana Akomea attended New Era Preparatory School behind Accra Polytechnic, and proceeded to Ghana Secondary Technical School (GSTS) in Takoradi for his Secondary education after passing common entrance. He then went to Aggrey Memorial Senior High School in Cape Coast for his sixth form education.

He entered University of Ghana, Legon to read History and Political Science where he also did his National Service as a Teaching Assistant. He later did a Postgraduate diploma in Communication Studies at the same institution under the tutelage of the great P.A.V Ansah. He then went to do another diploma in Development Studies at University of Cambridge in England.

Professional Life

Upon his return to Ghana, Nana Akomea was putting plans in place to establish his own Marketing and Advertising Firm, until he met with late actor Charles Kofi Bucknor of Heritage Africa fame. Kofi Bucknor who owned Focal Point Advertising at the time convinced Nana Akomea to work with him even if for a period.

Together they worked with companies to include Kumasi Brewery Limited (KBL), Achimota Brewery and several other brands as well.

They were also behind the famous programme “Kyekyekule” which was hosted by George Laing.

Political Life

Nana Akomea returned to Ghana in 1992 after the Parliamentary elections, which his party the New Patriotic Party (NPP) boycotted the Presidential Elections.

He was Ward Chairman for his Constituency, Okaikwei South in 1993. In 1995, he became Parliamentary Candidate for the constituency and won the 1996 elections, becoming one of the youngest MP who entered the January, 1997 parliament. He served four terms as MP for Okaikwei South from January 1997 to January 2013 (16 years).

When the NPP won power with J.A Kufour in the 2000 elections, Nana Akomea served in capacities as Minister of Information and Minister for Manpower, Youth and Development. He also served as Director of Communications of the NPP when the party went back to Opposition.

He has been MD of STC since his appointment in 2017, and is credited with the massive transformation of the State Transport Company which has become competitive with other transport businesses.

Personal Life

Nana Akomea who has two children from previous relationship is married to Eno Akomea. The couple recently celebrated their anniversary with photos to mark the occasion. The couple got married on December 21, 2018.
