According to the archives of National Sunday Mirror Newspaper, one of the popular local drinks ( Akpeteshie) Powerfully Survived the colonial government effort to ban it in1952. That was five years before Ghana’s idea in 1957.
According to the interesting History, some of the whites felt that the brewing of Akpeteshie was something that was generating a lot of income. Notwithstanding, the whites also loved and enjoyed it.
Aside the positive side, the colonial government realised that most of the locals were behaving strange after drinking. Due to the continuous strange behaviour in the locals, it was nearly banned.
The whites reportedly consulted stakeholders and chiefs about efforts to ban it. Media debate about the ban of Akpeteshie emerged in most media outlets.
HOW AKPETESHIE SURVIVED THE BAN
It was explained that, the locals stopped using metals and nails in preparing their Akpeteshie. That reduced the abundance of alcohol in their products. The whites realised that, people who consumed that brand ceased to behave strange.
The whites then decided to focus on the commercial side of it and allowed producers to operate freely. That was how Akpeteshie survived the ban and has been the same till modern day Ghana.
