Speaking at the launching of his book, the former Ghana Black Stars captain stated that he was used to comments that he was the most-hated footballer in the history of Ghana.

However, the same people making harsh comments about his football career also claim that he is the most-loved footballer in Ghana’s history of football.

Sometimes I see people on the street and they tell me I’m the most hated player in Ghanaian history but they also tell me I’m the most loved player and I sit down and ask myself why the hated part”, he said.

However, upon careful analysis, he came to the realization that the good and harsh comments he is meted with by Ghanaians come along with the position and environment he found himself as a footballer because no one knew who he was when he started until he became popular.

As a reminder, Asamoah Gyan’s woes with Ghanaians started when he missed a penalty in the semi-final of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations. Ghanaians harshly criticized him for missing the penalty that could have sent Ghana to the finals of the tournament.
