The controversial E Levy has started today, Sunday, May 1 2022. Ahead of this new tax regime, a telecommunication giant MTN is cushioning its cherished customers by absorbing service charges for its life line customers.
At a stakeholder meeting held in Kumasi with mobile money operators, MTN regional representative announced that as part of the ‘s efforts to share the burden with it’s customers, the will abolish service charges on all mobile money transactions not exceeding 100 Ghana cedis as soon as the E Levy starts.
Relaying this message to members of Agency Bankers Association (ABAG), Mr. Osman, secretary to the association said the move of the leading telco is a step in the right direction. He encouraged members to communicate this development to all customers to ensure they continue to patronize the services. Osman encourage other telcos to emulate the example of MTN.
He added that, the E Levy affects only person to person transactions. That means any transaction done at the agent point deposits and withdrawals do not attract e levy.
President for ABAG Mr. Akosa advised all agents to prevent the temptation of charging customers extra for transactions. He said the association will not shield any member who indulges in such offences. He also advised members to work with banks and avoid keeping too much cash to prevent armed robbery attacks.
It is worthy of note that transferring money through Vodafone cash is still free. The only charge has to do with the e levy.
