A political lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Ransford Gyampo has asserted that, a democracy is bound to face relapse if it only confers political power to the people but economic right on the politicians.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page on Saturday, 30th April 2022, he wrote;
A democracy that delivers on the bread and butter issues of only political elites, but not the people, would always suffer threats of relapse. It is endangered if it confers only political rights on the people but economic rights on politicians.
In a separate related post shared on the same day, Professor Gyampo wrote ;
“A meaningful assessment of our 30 year old democratic practice can only be done by the people. Political elites who have benefited from the economic dividends of democracy can’t be the best judges in telling us about the goodness of democracy.”
His comments comes as a background to the celebration of 30 years of the 1992 constitution which was accepted through a referendum. Some people have called for the amendment of the constitution. President Akufo-Addo has also commented that, he is open to it’s amendment of the need arise.
