In 1958, Andrew Genzoli, a journalist of the Humboldt Times highlighted a funny letter from a reader about loggers in Northern California who had discovered mysteriously large footprints which Andrew joked about as “maybe it was a relative of the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas.”

He later said the story made a good Sunday morning story but his readers were swept away by the story and in response, Genzoli and Betty Allen, another Humboldt Times journalist published follow-up articles about the footprints, reporting the name loggers had given to the mysterious creature as “Big Foot” and that was the birth of a legendary mystery.

There are many stories about big footed men all over the world. In Western Canada the Sts’ailes First Nation have the “Sasq’ets” as the original name of the bigfoot but it’s history is traced directly to the Humboldt Times stories in 1958.

Even though loggers blamed acts of vandalism on Bigfoot, Betty Allen thought that most of them did not believe in the creature and were just passing around the legendary story. The story spread to newspapers all over the country and the TV show “Truth or Consequences” offered thousand dollars to anyone who could prove the Bigfoot was real.

Once the story and reward went public, it became a character in men’s adventure magazines and cheap trade paperback novels. In these stories, he was portrayed as a primal and dangerous character from the past who abodes in the wilderness. In the 80’s, he was portrayed as a symbol of the wilderness.

The big question which was asked was “who was making the huge sixteen inch track’s in the vicinity of Bluff Creek?” and it was even believed that they were actually marks of huge but harmless wild man, travelling through the wilderness and some even thought this could even be an animal.

Even though this mythical legend has persisted for more than six decades, there isn’t any real evidence of his existence.
