Women sports are more popular today than they have ever been but this was not always the case until some of these women broke down the barriers in sports. We bring you today, some of these great women who made has paved the way for other women to gain grounds in the sports circle.
i. Janet Guthrie
Janet Guthrie was not the first woman to get behind the wheel of a race car but she became the first woman to compete in NASCAR’s Winston Cup Series (known now as the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series), in the 1976 World 600 race.
She finished in the 15th place and even though it was a milestone for the history of women in sport’s, Guthrie was not with this achievement and became the first woman to run the Daytona 500-NASCAR’s wheel racing and became the first woman
to ever qualify for the Indianapolis 500. To date, fewer than twenty racers, both male and female, have competed in both the Dayonata 500 and Indianapolis 500. The only other woman to achieve this feat is
Danica Patrick. Guthrie finished 12th in the Dayonata 500 and 29th in the Indianapolis 500 and was inducted to the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2006.
ii. Manon Rheaume
In 1992, the NHL’s expansion Tampa Bay Lightning signed Goalie Manon Rheaume as a free agent. She was the first woman to sign an NHL contract as they believed she had enough skills to play against those competing at the highest levels of the game.
The year before she was signed professionally, she was the first woman to ever sign with a top junior division team, The Trios-Riveres Draveurs of the Quabec Major Junior Hockey League. In 1992, she
became the first woman to ever play in one of the four major men’s pro sports leagues, competing in an NHL exhibition game. While two goals were scored, she saved seven shots. She played on various teams until her retirement in 1997.
