On Wednesday Morning, Captain Smart has vented his spleen on his Onua TV show . He exclaimed that many innocent lives are suffering from cancer and other diseases because of the activities of some rich miners in the country. According to the renowned TV presenter , mining activities in Obuasi and Tarkwa pollute 262 rivers and plague residents with keratosis and diabetes.
The journalist further explained that, since 2004 there have been reported cases of skin diseases notably keratosis and type two diabetes caused by high intake of arsenic, a carcinogen associated with gold ores. He asked why only the affected mining communities are suffering from these diseases.
Captain pleaded with chiefs to discourage illegal mining activities and monitor their water bodies to help their people .
