The Republic Of Togo Has Been Hit With A Good News

Togo is a French West African Nation, on the Gulf of Guinea, and known for its palm-lined beaches and hilltop villages. According to the World Bank report, the population of Togo is 8.279 million as at the year 2020.

The information currently coming from Togo reveals that, the country has been hit with a great news; as their Members of Parliament, have finally voted to join the Commonwealth Group of Nations.

The Commonwealth of Nations, generally known as the Commonwealth, is a political association of 54 member states; almost all of which are former territories of the British Empire.

Commonwealth was founded in December 1931, with its Headquarters in London-United Kingdom.  

The Togolese parliament, who started the process of joining the Commonwealth in the year 2014, passed a resolution on Friday, April 22, 2022; asking the government to make a formal bid for membership of the Commonwealth.

According to the Togolese Speaker of Parliament, Yawa Tsegan, “Togo is not leaving the Francophonie. It will only strengthen the English teaching programmes, and reactivate other partnerships”.

Togo, has been a member of the Economic Organisation of West African States (ECOWAS, since May 28, 1975. The Country is also a member of the International Organisation of La Francophonie – a group of French-speaking countries, that are mostly former French colonies.

Currently, the African Nations, who are part of the Commonwealth are; Botswana, Cameroon, The Gambia, Ghana, Kingdom of Eswatini, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia and Nigeria.

The rest are Rwanda, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Kenya, South Africa, Uganda and United Republic of Tanzania.
