Lebanese National Caught Carrying Fake US$10,000.00 Punished

A Lebanese national caught carrying wads of fake United States (US) dollars totaling $10,000.00 has been punished by an Accra Circuit Court for breaking the law.

Al-Zoubeyr Chaaban, said to be aged 25 years and a pastry chef, was arrested through the vigilance and quick thinking of the security operatives at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).

The Lebanese pastry chef had arrived at the Kotoka International Airport from his home country of Lebanon and whilst going through the arrival checks, the alertness of one of the security officials led to the discovery of the wads of fake US$100 notes totaling US$10,000.00.

Al-Zoubeyr Chaaban was carrying the counterfeit dollar notes in a carry-on-bag.

The security officer, who suspected the dollar notes to be fake, seized the pastry chef together with the baggage he was carrying on him from Lebanon to Ghana.

A-Zoubeyr Chaaban, was subsequently handed over to the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) – the internal intelligence agency, which is an integral part of the National Security Council, which has responsibility for matters of counter-intelligence and internal security of the country for questioning.

Police Detective Inspector Richard Amoah told the Accra Circuit Court presided over by Prosper Duelove Gomashie, where the Lebanese had been dragged to answer criminal charges that A-Zoubeyr Chaaban admitted ownership of the bag containing the fake dollar notes and its contents.

He said the fake notes were sent to the Bank of Ghana (BOG) by the officers of the National Investigation Bureau to authenticate the genuineness or otherwise of the dollar notes and it came out that the notes were not genuine – fake.

A-Zoubeyr Chaaban would not waste the time of the court and admitted guilt.

The circuit court ordered that he should pay a fine of Ghs8,400.00 and should he fail to pay the fine, he will spend two years in jail.
