Lucrezia Borgia was a Spanish-Italian noblewoman of the House of Borgia and born on the 18 of April, 1480. She was the daughter of Alexander VI and Vannozza dei Cattanei and reigned as governor of Spoleto, a position which was usually held by Cardinals.

She was arranged for several marriages by her family to advance their political positions and they included her betrothal to Giovanni Sforza, Lord of Pesaro and Gradara, Alfonso of Aragon, Duke of Bisceglie and Prince Salerno.

There were claims that Alfonso of Aragon was an illegitimate son of the King of Naples and that the brother of Lucrezia, Casare Borgia murdered him after he lost his political value. She was cast by her family as a femme fatale and this has been portrayed in many artworks, novels and films of her.

There were rumours of extravagant parties which were thrown by the Borgia family and these parties usually ended with cases of incest, poisoning, and murder on the part of Lucrezia but these rumours were said to be raised by rival parties.

She was known to be a mother of seven or eight, begotten with her different spouses. Even though Lucrezia was the daughter of a Pope, she was godly in all ways as history claims and had in possession, a hollow ring which she used in frequently poisoning drinks.

There were also claims that while in matrimony, she had other affairs with other men and they included Pedro Calderon, who was the chamberlain of Alexander VI, her brother-in-law, Francesco II Gonzaga, the Marquess of Mantua, and the poet, Pietro Bembo during her third marriage.

The love letters between her and Pietro were deemed as “the prettiest love letters in the world” by the Romantic poet, Lord Bryon when he saw them in the Amebrosian Library of Milan on October 15, 1816.
