Sporting Director of Accra Lions, Ibrahim Tanko is surprised at his side’s output in their 3-0 home loss to Hearts of Oak on Friday.
The Premier League new boys could not contain the defending champions in match day 26 in the Accra derby with Daniel Afriyie Barnieh’s brace and Isaac Agyenim Boateng’s singular, earning three points for the Phobians. A red card to midfielder, Rashid Abubakar on the 37th minute further distracted Lions’ game plan but Tanko believes his charges rather accorded too much respect to their opponent.
“I think they gave Hearts of Oak a lot of respect which is not supposed to happen. “I mean, this is not the first round, they played the first round and they saw how the premier league is. “So I expect them to play more, they don’t have to respect any player when they are on the pitch. “It’s very unfortunate that we lost and I think we have to go and prepare for the next match,” Ibrahim Tanko told StarTimes. “I think we allowed them a lot of spaces, when you look at the first goal, it’s just one pass beating all of our lines which was not good.
“So I think we have to work on it. We gave them a lot of spaces, I think it’s part of the respect they have for the players, I don’t think it should happen.” Ibrahim Tanko added. Accra Lions lie 10th on the league table despite the defeat with 33 points from 26 games of the 2021/22 league season.
